Cynthia Pryor, a Big Bay resident arrested yesterday by local law enforcement for “trespassing” on public property, pled “not guilty” during an arraignment hearing today, in Marquette County District Court.
Pryor’s pre-trial court hearing is scheduled for 10:30, on May 6.
Pryor could post $100 of a $1,000 bond in order to be released today, but has decided to remain in the Marquette County Jail until her next hearing.
Yesterday, Pryor was sitting on an old tree stump, with her dog, near Rio Tinto’s proposed mine site when approached by Rio Tinto security guards, who told her to leave the area. The guards contacted area law enforcement shortly before noon. State and County police responded and arrested Pryor, who insisted she was not trespassing, as the land is publicly-owned, and that Rio Tinto was bulldozing illegally on public land.
Rio Tinto and law enforcement claim that Pryor actively attempted to stop a bulldozer.

When will the “good” people of Marquette hold their elected officials accountable to protect the public trust. We’ve already seen one two-faced hypocrite cave in to political pressure and sell out his morals. Is this what people do up there? Let old women and kids battle the corrupt corporations and politicians while the rest of you local yocals play deaf and dumb. You deserve to have your natural beauty stripped away acre by acre. The U.P is suppose to be someplace special. What a joke!
hey i’m all for what shes doing and i listen to fox news and talk radio and i absolutely unequivocally DONT WANT THIS GODFORSAKEN MINE i support her wholeheartedly us locals hate this mine with a passion but the courts and “representatives” are bought and paid for by kennecott its all about the golden rule the one with the gold makes the rules its so disgusting… bravo to her though!!!
I learned recently that only 2% of earth’s water is fresh.
Of that, only half is accessible.
10% of that is in Lake Superior plus 10% more downstream in the other Great Lakes equals 20% of earth’s accessible fresh water.
Kennecott / Rio Tinto wants to take a leak in our Lake. In exchange, they’ll send their profits to England and Wall Street. (Rio Tinto can mean “red river” or “stained river.”)
Google … Rio Tinto Bougainville … if you want to learn what great neighbors these guys are. …
Faust! You’re a piker!
And how long will we be barred from using public lands?
The catch is that they’ll clean up when the mine is no longer operational. The mine is ‘operational’ so long as a single storage shed exists and they pay a minimum wage ‘guard’ to hand out.
A) You can’t clean up sulfide mining; no one ever has, no one ever will.
B) They have absolutely no … See Moreintention of spending one dime on clean up so long as they can spend a nickel on bribery.
The Department of Environmental Quality is not involved in ensuring the environment or quality, it’s merely a dodge set up to avoid regulation. It’s like the Forestry Dept. exists to serve up trees on a silver platter to the logging industry.
Happy earth day to you ….
Gotta quit kickin’ our ‘Dog around. Don’t let ‘em leak in our Lake!
