Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are directing Canadian military forces and emergency operations, including ground and air crews, to rescue motorists after a winter storm and blowing snow stranded them for over 30 hours on Highway 404 in Lambston, County. According to an OPP news release, nearly 360 vehicles and 300 people are stranded. Those rescued are being taken to nearby warming stations.
The police are encouraging stranded motorists to remain in their vehicle and consider pooling vehicle resources until rescuers are able to reach their location.
One lucky victim, Mr. Vickrey, a commuter who lives in Rochester, Mich. and travels to work in Sarnia, had to bunk up with a trucker to stay warm.
According to the Vancouver Sun Vickrey said, “I spent the night in her truck,” “She had an extra bunk so I climbed up there and got a few hours sleep. And she served us pears and oatmeal for breakfast.”
The Windsor Star reported Mayor Case of nearby Warwick Township saying, “We’ve seen lots of winter storms over the years, but nothing that has shut everything down like this.”
